Union of the Comoros is located in the eastern coast of Africa and an island nation in the Indian Ocean. It is on the northern end of the Mozambique Channel. Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Seychelles are the nearest countries of Comoros. It is the member state of the Arab League and is the third smallest African nation. The name came from the word Qamar means Moon. There are four major islands in the country of Comoros and they are Mwali, Mahore, Nzwani, and Ngazidja as well as there are smaller islands. The Mayotte island located in this country is not administered by the Union of Comoros but France consider this island as overseas collectivity and this island was voted for independence and it became the overseas department of France.

The African and Austronesian were the first inhabitants of Comoros islands reached here through sea. Their first archaeological site is Nzwani, which shows the history of these settlers. These islands came into limelight after the settling of diverse groups from the Persian Gulf, Madagascar, and Malay Archipelago. The political conflict was always the issue in this country however it ended when Colonel Mohammed Bacar became the President of Anjouan in the year 2001 but he got rejected by the Comoros federal government and the African Union and his rule ended in the 2008 invasion of Anjouan. After the independence from France the Union of Comoros has faces over 20 coups.

The islands of Comoros across the Indian Ocean this the most enchanting and outrageous place, far away from the muddle of different places these are basically remote islands. The cluster islands of Moheli and Anjouan are amazing and live up to expectations of travelers. Banana and palm tress with the scent of ylang-ylang and cloves this place is rich with Swahili culture. The place is well known for trading which are basically Persian sultans, Arab traders, Portuguese pirates, and African slaves. These islands are very relaxing on white sandy beaches with aqua seas and the scenic rainforests with giant bats are worth watching. Grande Comore is the largest island in all the islands and has the largest active volcano in the World named Mt. Karthala. The walking and trekking on the desert landscape made by this volcano is a different experience. The island of Moroni in Grande Comore is still a part of France you will love to see the beaches and people are mostly French speaking. Comoros is also named as “Cloud Coup-Coup” because of its fanatical politics and its independent islands and after this crazy politics all the islands were decided to be under the banner of Union des Comoros.

Comoros is not for everyone the tourism here is slow you need to develop patience, humbleness and flexibility to explore Comoros. Islam is the major religion here and they have some restrictions for everyone. But there is something for tourists like drinking rum at the resort talking with locals and sipping tea, exotic safari etc this is a place of adventure.

Weather in Comoros

The Comoros have tropical maritime climate the months with hot and humid season between November and April and cool, dry climate in May and October. There severe rainfall on the north east areas of the islands. The best time to visit these islands is the dry season between May and October and these islands are subject to cyclones in January.

How to reach Comoros

There are many airlines connected with Comoros but the major airlines which have frequent flights are Air Austral, Sudan Airlines, Yemenia Yemen Airways, Air Tanzania Corporation and Air Madagascar. Most of the Comoros airlines land at Moroni International airport and Ivato Airport. There are many domestic flights connecting with different parts of the country. Traveling by boat is also possible from Madagascar and Comoros and it needs plenty of time and patience. These are basically cargo ships, yatchs etc and take lots of time to reach Comoros. Zanzibar (Tanzania) and Mombasa (Kenya) are the main places from these ports cargo boats to Madagascar are available. Rental cars and busses are also available to explore Comoros. The taxis and local transport is also available to move from one place to another. Buses, tram, car, motorcycle etc are available easily to get around in Comoros.

Accommodation in Comoros

Accommodation on the Comoros Islands is less as compare to other surrounded places. There are very few hotels and pensions located in Matsamudu and Moroni and only these two places handle tourism and business of the Comoros islands. Room sharing is common on these islands and there are simple rooms and shelters on the slopes of Karthala which is an active volcano.

Places to visit in Comoros

Non tourist activities are the key places of attraction and attention like the wine growing areas of France, the vegetation and the most well known business is the making of perfumes as it covers the production of 65 percent of World’s perfume essence. These perfumes are made from the ylang-ylang, orange, jasmine, etc.

Ngazidja (Grande Comore) is a pleasant and peaceful town with modern construction and market. There are few Comoros mosquemosques which makes this town an attractive scenic view. The most adventurous the climbing to Mount Karthala with the world’s largest live volcano. Climb to this mountain before checking the situation and you can also stay here for one night as there are small shelters. A small fishing village near Moroni named as Itsandra is a beach where you can see the dance performed by local men and this was the ancient capital of the island.

Arab sail boats called as Dhows are built on the beach of Fomboni and it is the smallest island with a waterfall at Miringoni you can also see the giant turtles in the Niumashuwa Bay. Nzwani Island is well known for waterfall and vegetation. Bimbini area is the best beach area here, and you can also see the perfume distilleries at Bambao. Mahore is the place of very good beaches and amazing scuba diving facilities. The world’s largest lagoon is here. A waterfall named as Sulu is worth watching.
