Castleton is a unique place in Yorkshire, England. This place is a small hamlet and is set on a steep hillside which overlooks the Esk Dale.
The major attractions of this place is the Parish Church, which houses the furniture by Robert Thompson, more famously known as the Mouseman of Kilburn.
There are many attractions in and around Castleton.
Inspired by is a gallery which showcases the work of the local artists and artisans. This building is near the Moors National Park Centre. It is also known for winning the British Wood Awards.
Another interesting place to visit is the Scarborough Art Gallery which is an “Italianate villa built somewhere in the 1840’s and is a part of the Crescent. This gallery displays the finest art collections of Scarborough which features seascapes and others. Also, this art gallery hosts temporary exhibitions”.
Other than this, there are a couple of historic sites and houses where you can visit. The Wheeldale Roman Road is a mile long road, which leads from the north of the campus at Cawthorn and dates back probably to 1 AD.
The Whitby Abbey is a “moody and magnificent ruins which has drawn successive generations from saints to draculas to this site of settlement, devotion, religion and literary inspiration”.
Ayton Castle is another 14th century three storey stone tower house. The inner and the outer bailey ramparts are to the east of the tower which is covered with grass and is the foundation of an inner gateway and traces of a fishpond.
Apart from these, there are some fun-filled water based attractions.
Angling Party Pontoons at Whitby Harbour is an amazing place to be in. “Steaming through a beautiful harbour on the North Sea, opens a whole new visual world of sea cliffs, fresh air, and a wide range of marine resident wildlife”.
The Historic Water Chute and the Boating Lake is another destination where you can visit. This is a ride that gives you goosebumps. This chute has been operating since 1932 and is accessed by the public. This attraction stands tall for many years now.
Apart from this, there are some wildlife areas where you can visit. The Playdale Farm and the Scarborough Sealife and Marine Sanctuary are some of the popular ones.

Castleton is studied briefly during the GCSE course for geography, due to the nearby quarry, to the south of Castleton. It is also studied during some A-Level Geography courses because of its location and status as a declining village community. In times past Castleton was actually the main market and industrial town serving Upper Eskdale. There were annual wool, cheese and cattle fairs, cheese market and a silk mill.
