Lima Places of Attraction



Come to Lima, and enjoy the many attractions that so form the major part of travel experiences here. Lima is a great tourist destination and a perfect retreat for all those who wish to spend the best of their vacations in the best manner possible.

While in Lima, bullfighting is a great pastime, which is relatively a great adventure amongst the wealthy people of this region. The leading families of the region of Peru have bets to hold fights in Lima in the months of November and October. During this time they invite some of the best bull fighters from across the world from Venezuela, Mexico and Spain and have a fight.

Then there is the Plaza Mayor which is the main urban centre and main square of the city of Lima. It was discovered by Francisco Pizarro in the year 1535. It has many buildings dating back to the colonial period. There are buildings like City hall, the Cathedral and the Government Palace. There is a beautiful fountain at the middle of this huge expanse and it looks really beautiful. Antonio Rivas designed it and it dates back to the year 1650. It has the coats of arms of Spain and Lima. It also has the coats of arms of the Viceroy Conde De Salavtierra. This square has been recently renovated and has been given back all its elegance and is today one of the major Peru attractions.

Also there is the Cathedral that was dedicated to Our Lady of the Ascension. It was Francisco Pizarro who laid the first stone on the day Lima was discovered. There were earthquakes which always dsestroyed the construction of the church and it had to be rebuilt many times. There is the statue of Virgin of the Evangelization which was crowned by the Pope John Paul II., this statue was a gift given by King Carlos V of Spain. There was a special ceremony that was held for this in the year 1985. There is a baroque chapel here and there is a very magnificent carving of Jesus Christ here. It is said that Francisco Pizarro was buried in the crypt in the church. There is the Bishop’s Palace which lies next to the Cathedral’s Government palace.

Visit the Government palace which is seen on the place where the palace was built originally. This was the main headquarters of the officials of the government. There are magnificent rooms which display a lot of works of art which are special to the palace.

Situated on the place where the first town hall lay is the Municipal palace. This is a construction which dates back to the year 1939. This is the beautiful masterpiece of Emilio Harth Terre, Jose Alvarez C and Ricardo de Jara Malachowski. There are balconies here which are made of wood and there are elegant staircases which are found in the interior. Peru paintings and Peru photos are found within the house and there is a display of all the historical documents that were signed during the time Lima was discovered. There are beautiful collections of paintings given by artists like Ignacio Merino who is a very famous Peruvian artist.

Lima also has the very popular Pancho Fierro Art Gallery which is situated in a region called Pasaje Santa Rosa.

Go to the San Francisco Church and convent and go round this monastery and get an idea of the beautiful architecture of this place. This was constructed sometime in the 17th century and also is inclusive of the Convent and Church of San Francisco and the Chapels of La Soledad.
